The Importance of Movement During Pregnancy

Writer: Sally WigginsSally Wiggins

Most people have heard that movement during labor helps it progress faster and smoother. Babies need space to navigate the pelvis and movement helps create the space needed. But we can make this journey even better by doing lots of different movements during pregnancy so the first time we try a position isn't during labor.

We tend to spend a lot of time sitting in modern society. Sitting at a desk for school or work, sitting in a vehicle, sitting in a chair or on a couch watching TV, are all very common. All this sitting shortens the muscles and fascia along the backside of our legs creating tension. This tightness can make it harder to access a greater range of motion and positions that would be helpful during labor.

Taking the time during pregnancy to participate in prenatal yoga, chiropractic care, daily walks and other low impact activities and exercises can make a big impact on how fast and smooth your labor goes. Practicing positions that open the pelvis at different levels, the inlet, mid-pelvis, and outlet, will make it easier to find these positions during birth without having to think about it. Birth will become more intuitive and less stressful trying to remember all the "right" positions.

As a Body Ready Method certified pro, I can help you not only learn the best positions for birth, I can help you find the best exercises for your specific body to create space and reduce tension in your upper body and pelvis while strengthening your core and balancing your pelvic floor.
